Field experiment on relationship of Brotia sp. On lotic periphyton community was conducted during October to November 1998 at Nam Nao National Park Fire proved bricks were use as artificial substrates. Forty - five bricks were put into a stream for 4 weeks before starting experiment to allow developing of periphyton. Snails at equal size were collected from the same stream and were kept in basket for 24 hour for allowing snails to clear their digestive tract. Three study groups were sets, (i) control periphyton - twenty periphyton developed bricks exclude snails. (ii) control snail - twenty clean bricks were put into a stream at the start of experiment with 10 snails per brick and (iii) experiment group - ten snails were introduced to each twenty periphyton developed bricks. Each brick was place separately in a plastic blasket with lid cover. This basket has holes so, water can flow through the basket. The perforate were small enough to prevent snails from escape or get in to the basket.       At the start of the experiment, 5 periphyton developed bricks were taken and brush was used to remove periphyton. Periphyton was kept in dark bottom at 4 C and brought back to the laboratory at Khon Kaen University.      On the day 7, 14, 21, and 28 of the experiment 5 bricks from each set were randomly retrived to collect periphyton and snails. Periphytonwas kept as previous. Snails were preserved in 70 percent ethanol. A measurement of chlorophyll a from periphyton and an analysis of algae composition were carried out in laboratory. Biomass of snails were measured using dry weight and gut analysis of snails was carried out.      The results show that standing crop of periphyton in both control and experimental groups have a tendency of increasing cholorophyll a. Experiment group has an increasing rate higher than control group. No significant difference of snails biomass in both groups. Females with their brood pouchs might cause an error of the biomass.      The composition of algae in snails digestive tract differ from brick community. Chlamydomonus - like cell and Chroococcus sp. were the most two types found in the digestive tract. While the diatom Nitzchia sp. and Navicula sp. are dominent on the substrates. Whether or not, Brotia sp. regulates algae community by increasing turn over rate of algae or Brotia sp. may play a role on control competition between algae. These hypothesis require more researches.
